Sharing: The Essence of Christmas

Updated: Nov 26

It is that time of year again when our bank accounts get deposited with bonuses and other financial supplements.

Dream for a better future. And take us along so we can share your journey and celebrate your victory. - My True North

People cheerfully march through the doors of shopping malls and happily pick one expensive buy after another and soon, the wallet empties just as quickly as bank accounts get filled with bonuses.

Now I wonder why people choose to get broke trying to look rich with all these expensive embellishments that do not even mean anything to the eyes of others?

Now I wonder why people choose to get broke trying to look rich with all these expensive embellishments that do not even mean anything to the eyes of others?

Why do they even try to impress people who have less than they do? I don't mean to kill anyone's good Christmas spirit, but now that I am older, I have become wiser and more discerning when it comes to material things.

I used to be a hoarder myself. Not knowing any better can make you one of the idiots who don't mind blowing those big paychecks during holidays on things that aren't profitable, useful and senseless to say the least.

Had I not learnt my lesson the hard way, I would have been the same person who struts to the mall and buys expensive gifts for everyone and go on spending every penny I have just for the holidays. And when the festivities have ended and things start to settle, I would realize there was not any money left.

Holidays are not meant to be stressful. If we become wise spenders, we would always spend what is left after saving, buy gifts within our means and celebrate simply but solemnly. It is the birth of Christ that we are celebrating after all and we are not taught to give lavish gifts but to spend time together and celebrate.

What many pompous people don't know is that, most people don't care how much your dress, watch, shoes or car is worth. People would notice for a time and look on, maybe, but who cares? They won't. And these things do not increase your value or worth to the eyes of others. People don't get respected for what they own but for their legacy and good deeds to others.

So, this Christmas, instead of trying to impress people with your most recent buy, or stirring the green-eyed monster in those who have less, try to share a little of what you have to those who have none, and those who literally have nothing to eat for noche buena and media noche this Christmas.

Let us embody what Jesus did during the last supper and in the parable of bread and fish: the essence of sharing.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Ps. My True North is not going to distribute loaves of bread to homeless people living on the streets on the 24th but donating the budget to a nonprofit Christian organization.
